Three years EU-Turkey Deal: dangerous, inhumane and inefficient
Updated: Jun 16, 2019
After almost three years of implementing EU-Turkey deal, the situation on the Greek islands remains inhumane. Dire reception conditions, ineffective procedures in combination with the restriction of movement for asylum seekers create islands of hopelessness and deterrence. Together with 24 other NGOs, we once more address European institutions to remind them of their humanitarian and political responsibility for the situation. The situation on the Greek island is a disgrace to the European Union.
The signatories of the open letter are inter alia calling on the European Union leaders to:
1. urge the Greek Government to suspend immediately the restriction of movement that unnecessarily contains asylum seekers in the Greek islands, imposing squalid and dangerous living conditions on them;
2. urge the Greek Government to better allocate and use EU funding - not only prioritizing the support of the border control and asylum procedures, but also ensuring the provisions of essential services;
3. urgently agree on fair and sustainable arrangements for sharing responsibility for asylum seekers arriving in Europe.
