4th Open-Letter to the European Commission
Updated: Jul 25, 2019
On 25 January 2018, we and other NGOs have replied to the European Commission with another open letter. Since November 2017 we regularly exchange letters with the European Commission regarding the situation in the EU Hotspot Vial.
We highlight the still inhumane reception conditions as well as the severe issues regarding the asylum procedures in the EU Hotspot Vial. We make clear that the presence of NGOs in Chios is the result of the failure of both Greek authorities and the EU to develop a humane and adequate approach to receiving people seeking safety in Europe. We emphasize that the EU bears political responsibility for the situation in the EU Hotspots which the Commission cannot deny simply by referring to the EU's finanical assistance to Greece. We are astonished that given the overwhelming number of reports denouncing the cost of the implementation of the EU Turkey Statement and the EU Hotspot Approach in terms of human rights violations, the Commission continues to believe that it is purely a matter of implementation rather than of its fundamentally flawed design. We are looking forward to discuss these issues with representatives of the Commission during their next visit to Chios which had been announced for early 2019.
